Dynamic hyperarticulation of coda voicing contrasts.

چکیده
This study investigates the capacity for targeted hyperarticulation of contextually-relevant contrasts. Participants communicated target words with final /s/ or /z/ when a voicing minimal-pair (e.g., target dose, minimal-pair doze) either was or was not available as an alternative in the context. The results indicate that talkers enhance the durational cues associated with the word-final voicing contrast based on whether the context requires it, and that this can involve both elongation as well as shortening, depending on what enhances the contextually-relevant contrast. This suggests that talkers are capable of targeted, context-sensitive temporal enhancements.

Dissociable Levels of Speech Processing in Second Language Perception
It is generally accepted that there are at least two levels of speech processing: a level that processes categorical (and possibly indexical) acoustic information, and a level that processes abstract information for phonemic/lexical contrasts. However, little is known about how these levels may interact to impede or facilitate the perception of non-native speech contrasts. Our study evaluates w...
متن کاملPosition-Sensitive Licensing Asymmetries and Developmental Paths in L2 Acquisition
Cross-linguistically, prosodically strong positions, including onsets and stressed syllables, may license a wider range of segmental contrasts (e.g. voicing, place) than relatively weaker positions, such as codas and unstressed syllables. Onset-coda licensing asymmetries are among the most frequently observed. For example, many languages allow contrastive obstruent voicing in onsets, yet restri...
متن کاملDurational cues to fricative codas in 2-year-olds' American English: voicing and morphemic factors.
In the process of phonological development, fricatives are generally assumed to be later acquired than stops. However, most of the observational work on which this claim is based has concerned itself with word-initial onset consonants; little is known about how and when fricatives are mastered in word-final coda position (e.g., nose). This is all the more critical in a language like English, wh...
متن کاملPerceptual Acquisitions of Non-nat Native Listeners of
This study aimed to examine how native and non-native language experience affects the adults’ perception of nonnative contrasts. More specifically, this study examined the perceptual acquisition of English syllable structures and voicing contrasts by Japanese listeners. The results from thirty-four native listeners of Japanese showed that even the listeners with virtually no exposure to English...
متن کاملAcoustic Analysis of English Codas by Mandarin Learners of English
Mandarin has a much more limited segmental inventory than English, and permits only nasals in coda position, presenting a challenge for learners of English. However, previous studies have mainly explored this issue using perceptual transcription. This study provides an acoustic analysis of coda consonant productions by Mandarin L2 learners of Australian English. The results indicate that they p...
